Housing partnership kicks off affordable project

ANDOVER — Merrimack Valley Habitat for Humanity and Andover Community Trust collaborated this weekend to kick off Andover’s first 100 percent permanently affordable homeownership community.

Local dignitaries, community leaders, supporters and friends met at the chosen site for affordable housing to be built in partnership by the two organizations. The chosen location is at 8 Lupine Road, Andover.

The project will build a total of six units, including two Habitat duplexes and one Andover Community Trust duplex, as a 40B project.

The two organizations will be assisted in their work by other volunteers and groups. Habitat for Humanity will build with volunteers, and ACT will be teaming up with students from Greater Lawrence Technical School.

This collaboration is a first for both organizations and will help provide six deserving families with the opportunity to own a home in Andover. The project will also expand the number of homes that remain permanently affordable to low- and moderate-income families.

“The project represents a wonderful example of what can be accomplished in Andover through partnerships and a commitment to collaboration,” said Andover Town Manager Andrew Flanagan. “Our community will be enriched by the families who call these new houses home.”

In addition to Flanagan, guest speakers at the event included Board of Selectmen Chairman Alex Vispoli, Superintendent of Greater Lawrence Technical School John Lavoie, and South Church Rev. Dana Allen Walsh.

“Through ACT’s 25 years of experience and commitment to affordable housing in Andover, combined with the craftsmanship from Habitat for Humanity and the students of Greater Lawrence Technical School, and the support of the South Church, the town will greatly benefit from the economic and cultural diversity represented by this project,” said Flanagan.
