Selectmen appoint members of zoning bylaw study committee

The Board of Selectmen appointed four candidates to a new zoning bylaw study committee.

The appointed candidates are Jon Maren, Susan Stott, Heather Lauten and Leonard James. In addition to the four, a representative from the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, and the Conservation Commission will also be part of the committee, createing a seven-member committee.

Board of Selectmen Chairman Alex Vispoli said he hopes to get the group up and running within the next 30 days.

“Every one of the candidates was great,” he said. “We are fortunate to have such good people raise their hands for this.”

The purpose of the committee will be to review existing zoning and suggest changes as warranted for in advance of Town Meeting consideration. The group will also review and evaluate zoning bylaws suggested by others and provide findings and recommendations to the Planning Board, according to Vispoli.

The hope for the committee is to create a more proactive approach regarding zoning in Andover, and provide the community more opportunity and time to review proposed changes.

The development of this committee will allow citizens to weigh in on zoning changes at their public meetings. The committee will follow the Open Meeting Law requirements and hold public meetings and post minutes following each one.

The new committee is an advisory board. The seven members of the board will each serve three-year terms.
